The Florida Green Lodging Program was established in 2004 by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection with the intent of recognizing and rewarding environmentally conscientious lodging facilities in the state.
Gov. Charlie Christ signed an executive order effective July 1, 2008, which states agencies shall contract for meeting and conference space only with hotels or conference facilities that have received the "Green Lodging" designation from the Department of Environmental Protection for best practices in water, energy, and waste efficiency standards, unless the responsible state agency head makes a determination that neither viable alternative exists.
The University of Florida will be hosting The Florida Green Lodging Conference on Nov. 10-12, 2008, held at the Hilton Inn in Gainesville. The conference will include valuable information about the program and how to be a designated green property. The Lake County Department of Tourism & Business Relations encourages local hotel owners and innkeepers to attend.
"Lake County encourages all their lodging facilities to become designated as green lodges and commends the lodges that have already become designated and those that are in the process," said Greg Mihalic, Director of the Lake County Department of Tourism & Business Relations
