Lake County Fire Rescue adds Advanced Life Support services to Fire Station 59

RELEASE DATE: March 14, 2019

TAVARES — Lake County Fire Rescue announced this week the addition of Advanced Life Support (ALS) services at County Fire Station 59 near Leesburg.
Station 59 marks the 21st station out of 25 stations to become ALS equipped, with another station slated to add ALS service this summer.
Upgrading from Basic Life Support (BLS) to ALS requires a number of enhancements and a license issued by the State of Florida. The upgrade will allow Firefighter/Paramedics to administer medications, make an early diagnosis and provide advanced emergency care as soon as they arrive on the scene of an emergency.
ALS vehicles are required to carry portable oxygen, defibrillation equipment, airway management supplies and equipment, and additional medications and fluids. Along with additional equipment for the vehicles, a Paramedic and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) must be on-hand to respond to calls where the fire engine is dispatched.
“Station 59 serves thousands of residents in western Lake County, including residents of Pennbrooke,” said Lake County Fire Chief Jim Dickerson. “Our firefighters responded to more than 700 calls in the area last year. The addition of ALS services will tremendously enhance our services to the citizens.”
The career firefighters of Lake County Fire Rescue protect county residents and visitors in an area covering approximately 1,200 square miles, with nearly 70,000 residences and up to 2,000 commercial properties.
