This quarter a team of employees from Economic Development & Tourism and Public Resources coordinated their efforts to ensure the National Training Center College 2014 Spring Games Tournament was a success. The Spring Games, hosted by Dot Richardson and the NTC, brings in over 300 college softball teams annually – second only to Bikefest in its tourism economic impact. This year’s tournament was held March 1 through March 21 at several venues, including the heavily used Minneola Athletic Complex (MAC). With just one month to coordinate efforts, the Parks & Trails staff, led by Dwayne Henry, immediately began to work closely with local groups to accommodate field requests for 171 games, this compared to 25 games in 2013. This Team worked together to accomplish the goal of assisting the NTC with its efforts to bring major sports related economic activity to Lake County. The Team faced and overcame numerous obstacles, including timing, weather, and availability constraints. The dramatic increase in the use of the fields is due both to the improvements Parks and Trails has made to the MAC and the excellent customer service provided by the staff that were present during the event ensuring the fields were game ready. As a result, success of the tournament was apparent and there was expressed appreciation for this Team’s effort, patience, and customer service during the event.
