With the incredible growth in Lake County, Fire Rescue was faced with the difficulty of streamlining and documenting annual inspections. LCFR approached the GIS Division of Information Technology for assistance and discussed an interactive program to assist with tracking and documenting engine company inspections/pre-plans for commercial properties. After several meetings and months of testing, the staff developed the Lake County Fire Rescue Pre-Incident Planning (PIP) application. The PIP application automatically identifies properties requiring inspection and allows users to collect information that is visible in real time to all LCFR personnel. The application also has built-in features that allow field personnel to identify properties coming up on annual renewal, as well as notifying the Lake County Property Appraiser’s office and GIS if any discrepancies are found. The goal of the annual inspection is to ensure that every commercial property is visited annually, so the fire crew will remain familiar and maximum points are obtained during evaluations. Potentially, the PIP application could help lower LCFR’s Property Protection Class, which would lower insurance rates for Lake County property owners. Ultimately, the program will save lives. This endeavor a fine example of multiple divisions within Lake County coming together to solve a problem, with no additional resources or costs to operate. This team definitely deserves recognition for their individual knowledge and dedication to the citizens of Lake County.
